Italy - Val Gardena / Seceda

September 22, 2024

Steps: 22,782

One of the main attractions we wanted to do was hike the Seceda ridgeline. This was also our first official hike in the Dolomites!

We were pleasantly surprised to have the road to the clouds to ourselves in the morning as we coasted toward Val Gardena.

Unfortunately, we had the road to ourselves because there was construction ahead and the road was closed for 3 months. I was also a little timid to even try going through given the cloud engulfing the road.

Only happy accidents in this area though! Above was the view from where we were asking directions and had to turn around. Only a 20 minute detour. (Thanks Google Maps)

We finally arrived at the base of Seceda! We ended up taking the cable car from the east side due to it being less crowded and a prettier view. If you can see the group of buildings down in the valley in the picture below, you can see why we opted to take the cable car for the majority of the way.

In order to enjoy the surrounding more / not have to pay for another lift, we opted to hike the last bit of the mountain!

Altitude may have gotten to Kaylee a little bit during the hike, but she pushed through!

Along the hike, there were several little "huts" with food, beer, and furry friends.

The cats were very well loved and helped us push through the hike!

Above was the other cable car from the west side. We were definitely happy with our choice after seeing how ominous it looked!

Paragliding was popular near the top of the ridge.

The clouds moved like waves spilling over the mountain. I never realized how much they moved and seemed to almost spawn out of nowhere.

The loop trail we took gave us several different perspectives of the ridge. Below, it is barely recognizable!

A nice local beer, coffee, and fresh lunch were well deserved after this hike! The live music at the "hut" was also a nice touch!

After our hike, we decided to drive into Ortisei to see the other town we were contemplating staying in.
It was a very cute town, just not as centrally located for our trip.
